The highest semi-active volcanic peak in Iran.

Highlights

  • An affordable peak of over 5000 m
  • Beautiful semi-active volcano in the shape of a pyramid
  • One of the 7 Volcanic Summits
  • Two fine acclimatization climbs at 4256 m and 4848 m
  • Discovery of Iran off the beaten track
  • A two-day tour of Tehran

With its 5671 meters, the Damavand, legendary volcano, deserves well of his nickname of "Roof of Iran". We start with the easy ascent of the magnificent Lashgarak (4256 m) and then the Alam Kuh (4848 m), Iran’s second highest peak with contrasting faces, which we climb on its arid and bare southern slope, with regular slopes and an easy path. Once these two peaks ascended, we turn our steps towards the lord of the place, the Damavand, highest volcano in Asia and as such, volcano of the 7 Volcanic Summits. Sixteen routes allow you to cross its slopes, some close to mountaineering, others simple hikes in altitude. We take the "normal route” which is the south slope. The Iranian mountain federation has built several inns at the foot of these different massifs, which make access comfortable.

Day 1

Welcome by our team and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Tehran

Day 2

Today’s capital of Iran, Tehran is a modern city whose thousand riches are hidden in the heart of a megalopolis of fourteen million inhabitants. Small trading town, Tehran developed after the destruction of Ray – Raghès for the Ancients – during the Mongol invasion of 1228, but became capital only under the Safavids in the 16th century.

Excursion in the northern part of the city with a walk that, by a pleasant path, leads us into the mountain for a last lunch in a typical restaurant ... We visit the Niavaran Palace (Shah’s Palace) and then, after a walk in the Jamshidiyeh Park, one of the most beautiful parks of Tehran, continuation to visit in Sad Abad, the White Palace.

Meals: breakfast Accommodations: night in hotel

Day 3: Tehran — Kelardasht-Vandarbon

Day 3

In the early morning we will leave Tehran and take the road north to the Caspian Sea and the mountains of Arborz. After 140 kilometers, we arrive at the town of Kelardasht in the province of Mazandaran, which runs along the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. We have about fifteen kilometers to travel on a small mountain road to reach the village of Vandarbon where we settle down at the complex of the federation of the mountains. Small fitness hike.

Day 4: Vandarbon — Tang e Galu — Hesarchal

Day 4

Early departure by 4X4 vehicle, to follow a chaotic track for about ten kilometers along the river in the valley until the end at Tang-e-Galu (3300 m). Our local team is waiting for us with mules to join the base camp of Lashgarak and Alam Kuh, the Hesarchal Camp (3750 m).

Day 5: Ascent of Lashgarak (4256 m) — Hesarchal

Day 5

Beautiful day of acclimatization on the slopes of Mount Lashgarak (4256 m) which faces the Alam Kuh. From the Hesarchal Mountain Camp, you climb up easy slopes to a glacial lock. Beyond, a small lake marks the lower limit of what was undoubtedly a vast glacier. The path goes up directly above the lake, crossing the boulders that lead to the summit ridge. 360° view with Alam Kuh on one side and Damavand on the other, but still far away. Return to Hesarchal Camp in the afternoon.

Day 6: Ascent of Mount Alam Kuh (4848 m) — Vandarbon

Day 6

The Alam Kuh, second highest summit of Iran offers contrasting faces. North of large granite walls and even a glacier.  Iranian mountaineers come to train in these vertiginous faces. At the foot of this slope, due to the proximity of the Caspian Sea, the vegetation is green. The southern slope, arid and bare, offers regular slopes that climb without particular difficulty.

Early start for the ascent. At the beginning of our progression, we will undoubtedly meet some climbers. After three hours of walking on a well-marked path, we reach the foot of the summit slope. We finish the ascent by climbing a large stone tree. At the summit, at 4848 meters, if the sky is clear, superb view of the Damavand, our final objective. The summit, made up of large blocks, unfortunately offers little space to settle. Descent by the same route to the camp of Hesarchal, then return to Tang e Galu where the vehicles are waiting for us to return to Vandarbon.

Day 7: Vandarbon — Caspian Sea — Polour (2270 m)

Day 7

Transfer to the foot of the Damavand by a road that crosses between the peaks of the Alborz, before reaching the coastal plain that precedes the shores of the Caspian Sea. What a change of vegetation between the dry south slopes and the very green north slopes of the Alborz! After the mountain, summer atmosphere at the beach for a little lunch break... We drive along the Caspian Sea between the villages of Chaloos and Mahmudabad where the road again forks southwards. The road is marked by deep parades. Suddenly, at a bend, the perfect pyramid of Damavand appears in all its glory. We drive along the east face to reach the village of Polour located at the foot of the south face of Damavand and starting point for most of the ascents of Damavand. If the accommodation in Polour is full, we stop about ten kilometers further at the village of Reyneh.

We finish the climb by a large slope of volcanic sand where, occasionally, fumaroles appear. We end on one of the edges of the large crater that makes up the summit of Damavand. Crossing or tour of the crater, to appreciate this moment... If the weather is clear, the view extends to the Caspian Sea.

END OF EXPEDITION

For reasons that cannot be foreseen at this stage, such as unpredictable weather, the physical fitness or lack of fitness of participants or other circumstancess (customs formalities, road conditions, traffic, landslides, force majeure, etc.), your expedition leader may have to adapt the program, if necessary, to ensure the smooth running of your trip. He remains the sole judge and the one who guarantees your safety. Activity times are given as an indication and may vary from one participant to another.

The itinerary for all our expedition programs, or the ascent program for our high-mountain expeditions, are given here as a guide only. They are flexible enough to adapt to weather conditions with a few contingency days. In any case, you should follow the recommendations of your guide, who may suggest that you cancel your expedition due to weather, safety or physical conditions.

It is important to remember that this is a truly unsupported expedition, and that anything can happen. Expeditions Unlimited, your expedition leader, your guide or our local teams can in no way be held responsible.

Any costs incurred as a result of a change in the expedition schedule (extra nights' accommodation, extra flights) will be borne by the participants and not by the organizers. "Contingency days" refer to the expedition in the strict sense of the term (base camp/base camp in the mountains, departure point/exit point on a traverse, etc.).

Any early return of the expedition or of certain members only (early success, abandonment, etc.), generating costs for accommodation, meals, changes to air tickets or other activities not provided for in this program, will be charged in full to the participants.

Trip notes

Guiding

We are accompanied by a French or English speaking Iranian mountain guide with great experience of these mountains, as well as a team of porters and drivers for transfers.

For unpredictable reasons at this stage, like adverse weather conditions, insufficient physical condition of participants, insufficient competencies of participants related to the intended activities, your guide may decide to adjust the intended program and/or activities. At all times, his decision will be final on all matters likely to affect the safety and well-being of the trip.

Difficulty level

Level rated: challenging

This program is designed for participants who take part in a regular sports activity several times a week, including endurance activity.

This climb is not particularly difficult. Given the length of the stages, it requires good physical condition

Meeting point

We meet in Tehran where we are welcomed at the airport by our local teams.

Given the diverse origins of the participants on this trip, international outward and return flights are not included in this package. In most cases, we book flights on your behalf to ensure that the whole group arrives at the destination at the same time. We do not charge any fees for these air bookings. Please do not hesitate to contact us. If you book your own tickets, we will advise you on the ideal flight schedule to enable all participants to arrive within a reduced time frame. At the very least, you need tickets that can be modified.

Accommodations

In Tehran and the major cities of the country, hotels category 3 to 4* (double room base) and traditional houses furnished; we choose them clean and quiet, well located.

During the expedition, we are in tents at the camps of the Iranian Mountain Federation, particularly active, which has also built several inns at the foot of these various mountains, making access comfortable.

Meals

The food in Iran is excellent, and very diversified according to the regions crossed.

During the expedition, we are welcomed at the camps of the Iranian Mountain Federation.

Transfers / Transport

Transfers are provided by private vehicle.

Group size

The group is composed of 4 to 10 participants maximum. The number of participants is deliberately limited to allow for greater immersion, to avoid embarrassing our hosts, and to develop freedom and flexibility. However, the maximum number may be exceeded if the last person to register wishes to travel with one or more other people. The services will not be modified, and the conditions of the trip will remain the same.

Equipment

Personal equipment is not provided. However, a complete list is provided to allow you to check that you are taking what is necessary.

All logistical equipment is provided.

Our commitments to sustainable development

Our commitment to a better planet has been a reality since the beginning of our story but we always need to do more and better. Please find out more about our charter and our commitments in terms of sustainable development. We have drafted our charter and take action through six themes on which we act as concretely as possible, most often with you: social equity and cultural respect, preservation of water, waste management in expedition, protection of biodiversity, raise public awareness on these subjects and finally, the optimization and recovery of CO2 emissions.

Regarding carbon emissions, most of which are due to air travel, we calculated and communicated in 2018 on the carbon footprint of each of our programs, expressed in tonnes of CO2.

These calculations made us aware of the importance of the total carbon emissions generated by our activity. Also, we have committed in 2022 to a carbon reduction that we believe is unprecedented in the tourism industry, aiming to reduce the total emissions of our activity by 5% per year, taking 2019 as the reference year (3,430 tonnes of CO2). This commitment is in line with the trajectory of the Paris climate agreements of 2015, the current benchmark. Thus, in 2030, we commit ourselves not to exceed 2,160 tonnes of C02. Thus, our maximum “carbon” budget for 2024 is 2,950 tonnes and for 2025, this budget will be reduced to 2,800 tonnes. And so on until 2030. To find out more about all of our calculations and our commitments in terms of reducing our carbon emissions.

In addition, since 2019, we have been encouraging you when you book for your journey to contribute with a donation to an independent NGO, among the two we have selected that share the commitments made in our charter. We matched the amount of this donation to this program's carbon footprint. Thus, the journey you are considering generates 2,64 tons of CO2, which corresponds to a 100% donation of 79 for an estimated value today of €30 per tonne of CO2. This donation remains of course optional and you can decide to give between nothing and 100% of this amount. Since 2019, including covid years of 2020 and 2021, we have been able to collect thanks to you nearly €7,000 for these associations.

Please do not hesitate to come back to us with any questions you might have regarding this carbon footprint mechanism, our other sustainable développement commitments or even to share with us your experience through a chat or a mail at contact@secret-planet.com.
