Overview

Ojos del Salado: the volcano of superlatives. The highest peak in Chile, the second highest in America (6893 m), it is also the highest active volcano in the world. It lies in the southern part of the Atacama Desert, the vast arid expanse of northern Chile, as large as Brittany, Normandy, Hauts-de-France and Île-de-France combined. One fifth of our territory. The tracks in the Atacama Desert are demanding. Crossing it from north to south to discover its various facets (such as the Tatio Geyser) means covering huge distances. We have deliberately opted for a more limited choice, concentrating on the beautiful Salar de Maricunga region in the Parque Nacional Nevado Tres Cruces and the Laguna Verde region, at the foot of the San Francisco (6016 m) and Vicuña (6077 m) volcanoes, before climbing the Ojos del Salado itself. A very complete program, ensuring excellent acclimatization, while limiting the number of tiring journeys.

The program starts in the town of Copiapo, the capital of Chile's mining industry and its third largest urban area. It is in fact a huge municipality, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes mountains on the border with Argentina. Here you'll find volcanoes with shapes and colours that are characteristic of Chile: Los Patos (6239 m), Nevado de Incahuasi (6621 m), Nevado Tres Cruces (6749 m) and, of course, Ojos del Salado (6893 m). Not forgetting the famous lagoons with their emerald, highly saline waters: Salar de Maricunga, Laguna Santa Rosa, and the most beautiful, Laguna Verde.

Itinerary

Day 1: Departure from Europe

Day 1

Flight to Copiapo via Santiago de Chile.

Meals: breakfast not included – lunch on the plane – dinner on the plane Accommodations: night on the plane

Day 2: Copiapo

Day 2

We are met at Copiapo airport by our correspondent. Transfer to the city and check into the hotel. Initial contact with the guide to confirm the following day's schedule. Copiapo is Chile's third largest city, capital of the mining industry, at the gateway to the Atacama Desert, almost 700 kilometers north of Santiago. Its proximity to the great volcanoes of the border line will be an excellent starting point. Its major Andean volcanoes include Los Patos (6239 m), Nevado de Incahuasi (6621 m) and, of course, Nevado de Tres Cruces (6749 m) and the lord of the land, Ojos del Salado (6893 m). The lagoons, vast expanses of water with varying degrees of salinity, offer an astonishing spectacle: Laguna Verde, Laguna Santa Rosa, Salar de Maricunga.

approximately 390 m Meals: breakfast not included – lunch not included – dinner not included Accommodations: night in hotel

Day 3: Copiapo — Don Juan

Day 3

We take the road towards Don Juan, which lies halfway between Copiapo and the Laguna Santa Rosa (Salar de Maricunga). The altitude (2600 m) is perfect for acclimatisation. The place takes its name from an old goldsmith who lived in the nearby mountains. We will be stopping off at a local community (the Coyas) that benefits from the passage of travellers.

approximately 3 h approximately 105 km approximately 2600 m Meals: breakfast in hotel – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 4: Don Juan — Laguna Santa Rosa

Day 4

We continue our journey over the Chilean Altiplano towards the Laguna Santa Rosa. Our second camp, located at an altitude of around 3700 meters on the edge of the lagoon, is essential to our acclimatization process. Our first easy trek will take us around this emerald lagoon.

by private vehicle approximately 1 h approximately 40 km approximately 3700 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 5: Ascent of Cerro Siete Hermanos (4700 m)

Day 5

We complete our acclimatization by climbing Cerro Siete Hermanos, which overlooks the Laguna Santa Rosa. The typical Atacama desert landscape unfolds before our eyes, with its tawny colours, ochres and the contrasting waters of the Laguna Santa Rosa. The first part of the ascent takes place on a 4X4 track before finishing on foot. Return to our Laguna Camp.

approximately 6 h + 1000 m / - 1000 m approximately 3700 m approximately 4700 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 6: Laguna Santa Rosa — Laguna Verde

Day 6

We are back on the road through the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park and along the Salar de Marcicunga. The landscapes are as desert-like and fascinating as ever. Ten or so kilometers before reaching Laguna Verde, we pass the Claudio Lucero refuge, a basic, icy hut. We set up our own comfortable camp some distance away. Let's make the most of the evening light and get plenty of photos.

approximately 2 h approximately 90 km approximately 4340 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 7: Laguna Verde — Cerro Mulas Muertas (5600 m)

Day 7

After a short transfer along the banks of the Laguna Verde, we head for the summit of the Mulas Muertas. A well-marked path starts from the Laguna. It then joins a vague spur that we follow to the summit. After a few kilometers of walking, the view over the lagoon becomes magnificent. Higher up, Nevado Hincahuasi (6621 m) and Ojos del Salado stand out against the sky. The path becomes lost before you reach the summit, giving way to stony terrain strewn with volcanic boulders.

approximately 7 h approximately 4340 m approximately 5600 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 8: Laguna Verde Cerro San Francisco (6100 m)

Day 8

We are back in our vehicles for a transfer close to the Agentine-Chile border. Cerro San Francisco is shared between the two countries.

approximately 1 h approximately 4340 m approximately 6100 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 9: Laguna Verde — Atacama mountain hut

Day 9

This is the last day we can use our all-terrain vehicles to gain altitude. We carry all our equipment to the Atacama mountain hut, 33 kilometers away. The road passes at the foot of Cerro Vicuña. The vehicles drop us off 2 hours' walk from the hut, so that we can continue acclimatizing. Now we are ready for the final ascent. The hut is a simple tin hut with only six places. So we set up our own tents nearby.

approximately 2 h approximately 5260 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in campsite

Day 10: Atacama mountain hut — Tejos hut — Atacama hut

Day 10

We get down to business. We have to carry a lot of the equipment needed for the bivouac before the climb. We follow the 4X4 track that leads to the Tejos hut (5837 m), a simple tin hut that cannot be used, 5 kilometers away. Once we reach the hut, we set up camp before heading back down to the Atacama hut for the night.

approximately 6 h + 580 m / - 580 m approximately 5260 m approximately 5837 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in tents

Day 11: Atacama hut — Tejos hut

Day 11

As we already carried most of the equipment the day before, this day will be less arduous. We are back on the same route as the day before to reach our high camp.

+ 580 m / - 5837 m approximately 5837 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in tents

Day 12: Tejos hut — Ojos Del Salado (6893 m) — Atacama hut

Day 12

Night-time departure for the final day's ascent. The acclimatizsation of the previous days is now bearing fruit. Depending on the snow conditions, the ascent can be mainly on rocky terrain, interspersed with glacial passages (walking between ice penitents). The summit pyramid, made up of large stacked boulders, requires a few easy climbing moves, but these are made difficult by the altitude. Back at the Tejos hut, we have to dismantle our camp from the previous day and bring everything down to the level of the Atacama hut.

approximately 9 h + 1060 m / - 1640 m approximately 5260 m approximately 6893 m Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in campsite Accommodations: night in tents

Day 13: Contingency day

Day 13

Contingency day in the event of bad weather (strong winds), for a second chance to climb the Ojos del Salado.

Meals: breakfast – lunch – dinner Accommodations: night in tents

Day 14: Atacama hut — Copiapo

Day 14

We take the road back to Copiapo, 260 kilometers away. One last look, a few last photos of the exceptional landscapes of the Chilean Altiplano.

approximately 6 h approximately 260 km Meals: breakfast in campsite – lunch with a picnic – dinner in hotel Accommodations: night in hotel

Day 16: Arrival in Europe

Day 16

END OF EXPEDITION

For reasons that cannot be foreseen at this stage, such as unpredictable weather, the physical fitness or lack of fitness of participants or other circumstancess (customs formalities, road conditions, traffic, landslides, force majeure, etc.), your expedition leader may have to adapt the program, if necessary, to ensure the smooth running of your trip. He remains the sole judge and the one who guarantees your safety. Activity times are given as an indication and may vary from one participant to another.

The itinerary for all our expedition programs, or the ascent program for our high-mountain expeditions, are given here as a guide only. They are flexible enough to adapt to weather conditions with a few contingency days. In any case, you should follow the recommendations of your guide, who may suggest that you cancel your expedition due to weather, safety or physical conditions.

It is important to remember that this is a truly unsupported expedition, and that anything can happen. Expeditions Unlimited, your expedition leader, your guide or our local teams can in no way be held responsible.

Any costs incurred as a result of a change in the expedition schedule (extra nights' accommodation, extra flights) will be borne by the participants and not by the organizers. "Contingency days" refer to the expedition in the strict sense of the term (base camp/base camp in the mountains, departure point/exit point on a traverse, etc.).

Any early return of the expedition or of certain members only (early success, abandonment, etc.), generating costs for accommodation, meals, changes to air tickets or other activities not provided for in this program, will be charged in full to the participants.

Trip notes

Guiding

1 English-speaking Chilean guide for every 3 participants. English-speaking guide with the possibility of having a French-speaking guide if the registration is made more than 6 months before the departure date.

For unpredictable reasons at this stage, like adverse weather conditions, insufficient physical condition of participants, insufficient competencies of participants related to the intended activities, your guide may decide to adjust the intended program and/or activities. At all times, his decision will be final on all matters likely to affect the safety and well-being of the trip.

Difficulty level

Level rated: difficult

This program is aimed at participants in good physical shape, with a significant sport practice, endurance in particular, holding a strong mental to face difficulties that are unforeseen by nature.

The ascent of the Ojos del Salado is not technically difficult. However, we are at a high altitude, not far from the psychological 7000-meter mark. Although the Ojos region is extremely desert-like, snowfalls can exceptionally occur and complicate the climb. You need to be aware of the special environment in this high-altitude desert. Temperatures range widely, and it is not uncommon to face night-time temperatures of –20°C.

Collective equipment is transported by 4X4 vehicle to the Atacama Base Camp. Beyond the base camp, each participant must carry his or her personal belongings and some of the food. With the equipment and clothing essential for the climb, the weight of your bag should not exceed 14 or 15 kilos. Any heavier and you will be carrying unnecessary items!

Participants will be responsible for putting up and taking down the tents at base camp and Tejos high camp.

Preparation courses for the high mountain/polar environment as part of our Adventure School can be a great asset, both to build confidence and to increase autonomy.

For this expedition, you will benefit free of charge from pre-expedition teleconsultation and membership of the 24/7 medical service for the duration of the expedition, set up with our partner Ifremmont. See below for details.

Technical difficulty

Mountaineering level: F like... Easy (Facile in French!)

In this program, the use of mountaineering equipment (crampons, harness, ice ax, ropes, etc.) is necessary but the route covered does not involve any technical difficulty. It is therefore aimed at beginners or even participants who have never practiced. Clearly, a little prior experience in the activity can be interesting, knowing how to equip yourself, knowing how to tie a few essential knots. The mountaineering courses at our Adventure School from three days are for you. And this technical rating applies of course to normal weather conditions: the difficulty can increase in the event of bad weather conditions, fresh snow on rocks, insufficient or lack of quality of the ice, etc. Likewise, the situation changes radically, for the same technical level, with the altitude, the weight of the bag, the lack of equipment on the route, the fatigue associated with the approach if it is long, the environment if particularly hostile, etc.

Meeting point

Not including air travel.

Given the diverse origins of the participants on this trip, international outward and return flights are not included in this package. In most cases, we book flights on your behalf to ensure that the whole group arrives at the destination at the same time. We do not charge any fees for these air bookings. Please do not hesitate to contact us. If you book your own tickets, we will advise you on the ideal flight schedule to enable all participants to arrive within a reduced time frame. At the very least, you need tickets that can be modified.

Accommodations

Copiapo

In 3-star hotels. We mainly use the Cumbres de Atacama and, when it gets too busy, the Las Pircas hotel.

Camps

For the duration of the trip, accommodation in North Face-type 3-person dome tents, used for 2 participants. A mess tent for meals and a sleeping tent complete the collective equipment. At Laguna Santa Rosa, we are staying with an Indian community that earns a small income from passing tourists. You can either stay in a tent (USD 30 per person) or in a lodge (USD 60 per person), payable on the spot.

Meals

Copiapo

The food in Chile is excellent, but very meaty. Vegetarians have a hard time of it.

In the camps

Fresh, nutritious food is provided every day, prepared by our cook.

On the ascent of the Ojos

Food always prepared by us. We provide a picnic lunch on the last day of the climb. However, we suggest that you bring a few snacks from France, which you will particularly appreciate at high altitude.

Drinking water

Drinking water is provided throughout. We transport it in the 4X4 vehicles that are always present. This is an increasingly important problem, given the spectacular reduction in glaciers and rivers in the Atacama desert. This water is used exclusively for cooking and to fill our water bottles. Remember to take at least 2 one-litre water bottles with you.

Transfers / Transport

Scheduled international flights. Within the country, by bus or specially chartered vehicles, or domestic flights with a local airline.

Group size

The departure is an international departure, sometimes involving several nationalities, and is not exclusive to Expedition Unlimited.

The minimum number of participants is 2, the maximum 10.   The number of participants is deliberately limited to allow for greater immersion, to avoid embarrassing our hosts, and to develop freedom and flexibility. However, the maximum number may be exceeded if the last person to register wishes to travel with one or more other people. The services will not be modified, and the conditions of the trip will remain the same.

Equipment

Personal equipment is not provided. However, a complete list is provided to allow you to check that you are taking what is necessary.

All logistical equipment is provided.

Oxygen

Below 7000 meters, oxygen is not required for ascents. For medical reasons, we carry a few bottles of oxygen in our vehicles. During the ascent of the Ojos, the guides carry a spare bottle with them. Helicopter rescue is not possible due to the constant high winds, so in the event of a medical evacuation, you will have to return to Copiapo.

Health

We have a heart rate monitor and oximeters, as well as a first aid kit.

Safety and communications

Each vehicle is equipped with a radio with a range of 60 kilometers. Each guide has a walkie-talkie to keep in touch with the base camp. We are also equipped with satellite telephones (for medical use only), an Inreach beacon and a Starlink link. We are in direct communication with the Andean rescue services.

We have VHF radios for high-altitude links and a satellite telephone for emergency medical needs.

Our commitments to sustainable development

Our commitment to a better planet has been a reality since the beginning of our story but we always need to do more and better. Please find out more about our charter and our commitments in terms of sustainable development. We have drafted our charter and take action through six themes on which we act as concretely as possible, most often with you: social equity and cultural respect, preservation of water, waste management in expedition, protection of biodiversity, raise public awareness on these subjects and finally, the optimization and recovery of CO2 emissions.

Regarding carbon emissions, most of which are due to air travel, we calculated and communicated in 2018 on the carbon footprint of each of our programs, expressed in tonnes of CO2.

These calculations made us aware of the importance of the total carbon emissions generated by our activity. Also, we have committed in 2022 to a carbon reduction that we believe is unprecedented in the tourism industry, aiming to reduce the total emissions of our activity by 5% per year, taking 2019 as the reference year (3,430 tonnes of CO2). This commitment is in line with the trajectory of the Paris climate agreements of 2015, the current benchmark. Thus, in 2030, we commit ourselves not to exceed 2,160 tonnes of C02. Thus, our maximum “carbon” budget for 2024 is 2,950 tonnes and for 2025, this budget will be reduced to 2,800 tonnes. And so on until 2030. To find out more about all of our calculations and our commitments in terms of reducing our carbon emissions.

In addition, since 2019, we have been encouraging you when you book for your journey to contribute with a donation to an independent NGO, among the two we have selected that share the commitments made in our charter. We matched the amount of this donation to this program's carbon footprint. Thus, the journey you are considering generates 4,62 tons of CO2, which corresponds to a 100% donation of 139 for an estimated value today of €30 per tonne of CO2. This donation remains of course optional and you can decide to give between nothing and 100% of this amount. Since 2019, including covid years of 2020 and 2021, we have been able to collect thanks to you nearly €7,000 for these associations.

Please do not hesitate to come back to us with any questions you might have regarding this carbon footprint mechanism, our other sustainable développement commitments or even to share with us your experience through a chat or a mail at contact@secret-planet.com.

Reviews

Americas Climb Ojos del Salado volcano at 6893 meters in Chile

A unique and surprising experience (in a good way).
I enjoyed the incredible landscapes of this volcanic desert, so hot during the day and cold at night. The Chilean support was very competent and friendly. This project can be completed in just 2 weeks. The acclimatization time is really short to get close to the almost 7000 m summit of the Ojos del Salado. Many thanks to Eric Bonnem and his highly professional team for their support. Loan of a Garmin inreach and daily exchanges on the progress of the expedition. And don't forget the Ifremmont's sound advice, a real asset and a reassuring bonus.
